Notice of Call for Proposals for Community Memories Program Guidelines

We’re inviting small community museums to develop online local history exhibits to share with all Canadians through the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC).

To be eligible, your museums must be a not-for-profit organization, be an institution with no more than five permanent full-time paid staff, and have completed, if applicable, any previous exhibit financed by the VMC.

Community Memories is not a Grants and Contribution program. The Canadian Museum of History, which is responsible for the VMC, enters into contracts with participating museums for the creation of Community Memories exhibits.

The deadline for receipt of proposals is 27 February 2015 at 5:00 EST.

Youth Heritage Forum 2015

The Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Office is holding their first Youth Heritage Forum. This event will bring together passionate young people, ages 18-35, from our community who have a strong interest in the field of heritage.

HFNL wants to hear what you have to say!

Heritage organizations and community groups in the Avalon Region are invited to nominate 1-2 youth representatives to attend.

November 20, 2014: Simple disaster plans for small institutions, an ANLA Workshop

The Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives presents  a one-day workshop on

Simple disaster plans for small institutions

Date: November 20, 2014 (9 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Location: ANLA office, Suite 201, 15 Hallett Crescent, St. John’s. Parking is available behind the building.

This workshop will teach you the basic principles of disaster planning and management  for heritage institutions and provide you with a customizable checklist for coping with that phone call in the middle of the night.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Avoiding disasters: detect, avoid, block, respond, recover
  • Disaster management policies
  • Stages of  a disaster plan: plan, assess, respond, recover
  • Creating your contact list

Registration deadline: Participants must register for this course by November 14, 2014.

Fees:    $75 for ANLA members       $100 for non-members

100 Years of the International Grenfell Association

 and the Delivery of Healthcare in Newfoundland and Labrador: A Symposium

The impact of British physician-missionary Sir Wilfred Grenfell (1865-1940) was widely recognised during the first half of the twentieth century. Grenfell’s lifework in Newfoundland and Labrador began in the early 1890s with the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. By 1914 the International Grenfell Association (IGA) was formed to focus on his work in this region. This one-day symposium will explore the historical significance of Grenfell, the IGA, and the delivery of healthcare in Newfoundland and Labrador over the last century and address issues concerning the present and the future.  Funds are provided by a Canadian Institutes for Health Research grant in the history of medicine to the Memorial University organizers of the symposium.  All are welcome, with refreshment breaks provided.

Electronic records management for small heritage organizations

Too many emails in your inbox? Too many drafts of reports and applications floating around?  Can’t remember the name of that important document you saved last week? This 2-day workshop will help your organization to deal with these problems  by introducing  participants to the basics of electronic records management.

•         What is records management and how does electronic records management fit in?

•         Why do electronic records need to be managed?

•         Who should be in charge of the job?

•         When do you make decisions about electronic records management?

•         Where should your records be kept and managed?

•         How do you manage electronic records?

The workshop is aimed at any group whose members  create and use electronic records and communication, either amongst themselves or externally.

Registration fee: $100 for ANLA members

$125 for non-members

Some financial assistance for transportation costs is available for members: please contact the ANLA office for more information. Note: . This is a good way to get your transportation costs covered for ANLA’s AGM, which will be taking place on the day after the workshop!

George  French is the Archivist and Manager of the Corner Brook Museum and Archives where he has held the position of archivist for the past eleven years. He is also the President of RI Solutions Inc., a records and information management consulting firm, and has been the consulting Records Manger for the City of Corner Brook for the past 6 years. He has studied Records and Information Management through the University of Toronto and other certified professional development programs. He is currently a Director on the Board of the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives, the Board of the Grenfell Campus Archives, Grenfell Campus, MUN and is a former Board member of the Corner Brook Museum and Archives.

1:30-4:00              Join us as we get creative with a workshop to make our very own pillow top!

What are pillow tops?

Pillow tops are woven with wool on wooden frames and were traditionally crafted by Newfoundland lumber camp workers to be gifted to their wives, girlfriends or mothers. They are sewn onto pillows, used as throws, pot holders or place mats. While there are different methods of making these pillow tops, it always begins with a handmade square wooden frame. Today, ANLA’s own Nicole Penney is one of a handful of people carrying on this tradition and providing detailed instructions through this hands on workshop.

At the end of the afternoon, participants will walk away with their very own pillow top and the knowledge and skills to make more. All materials and tools are provided, but if you want to bring your own yarn, that’s fine too!

To cover the cost of the luncheon and the pillow top workshop, there will be a $25 fee. Please contact the ANLA Office at 726-2867, or email anla@.nf.aibn.com and register so that we know how many people to expect!

There is no charge to attend the business portion of the AGM.

Two workshops in Trinity

Workshop 1

Joining ARC-ANLA: Adding your archival holdings to the provincial database

When: May 29, 2014, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Where: Lester-Garland House, Trinity

Instructor: Mary Ellen Wright, ANLA’s Professional Development and Outreach Officer

This workshop will explore what’s involved in making your archival descriptions available on ANLA’s recently-launched ARC-ANLA on-line database of descriptions. ARC-ANLA is ANLA’s Archival Records Catalogue (ARC), a portal to descriptions of archival records across Newfoundland and Labrador.

The workshop will include:

•       An introductory/refresher course on Rules for Archival Description (RAD), the Canadian archival descriptive standard

•       Hands-on training in how to add archival descriptions to ARC-ANLA

Workshop participants will also learn how to edit their institution’s entry in the associated directory of provincial archival institutions.

Fees:    $25 (Institutions must be ANLA members in order to add descriptions to the database.)

Policies and procedures – What are they and why do you need them?

When: May 30, 2014, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Many small institutions get into trouble because decisions about donations, loans, hiring and so on are made on an ad hoc basis. Well-established policies and procedures allow your institution to survive staff changes, funding cuts, board disagreements, disasters and even legal challenges. This workshop will help your institution to evaluate its policies and procedures, if you have them, and to create policies and procedures for your institution if you don’t have them. Topics to be covered include acquisition, appraisal, accessioning, archival arrangement and description, access and preservation.

Fees:    $50 (Institutions must be ANLA members in order to add descriptions to the database.)
