Audiovisual materials are a nearly ubiquitous element of any archival collection, yet their care can require specialized knowledge, specialized equipment and significant resources. Despite these limitations there are a number of steps you can take to give your audiovisual materials the best possible chance at preservation. This 2 hour workshop is designed to demonstrate a few of these approachable and low-resource measures that can make a huge difference in preserving audiovisual material for archives of any size. In this workshop we will discuss how to identify a variety of audiovisual formats (including film, video and audio) and how to assess their condition and devise a suitable storage strategy.
About the Facilitator:
Patrick Allen is an archivist who specializes in the preservation of film and video. He currently works as the Audiovisual Archivist at The Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal where his work involves the preservation, repair and digitization of a variety of audiovisual objects.
