The Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives is excited to host a Community Archives & Oral History Virtual Training in partnership with Heritage NL.

Are you passionate about local history, culture, or folklore? Curious about how oral histories can help safeguard our shared heritage?

Join us for an engaging and informative virtual training session designed for anyone with an interest in capturing community stories. Whether you’re a heritage professional, a student, or a community member, this session will introduce you to the essentials of conducting oral history research and building meaningful projects from the ground up.

We’ll cover:

  • The basics of field research and interview techniques

  • How to plan and structure an oral history project

  • Crafting effective and respectful interview questions

  • Navigating ethical considerations

  • Choosing the right recording equipment

Facilitator: Terra Barrett
Terra Barrett (she/her) is the Intangible Cultural Heritage Program Planner with Heritage NL. She holds a BA in Folklore and an MA in Public Folklore from Memorial University as well as a Social Media Certificate from Algonquin College. She is currently documenting untold histories, traditional skills, and the associated narratives of Newfoundland and Labrador’s historic places. Previously for Heritage NL, Terra conducted fieldwork in several communities, and worked with the Oral History Roadshow and Craft at Risk projects. She volunteers with a number of organizations, and is particularly interested in the crafts, foodways and folk beliefs of the province. Terra has past experience working with MUNFLA, Them Days Inc., Mummers Festival, and The Rooms.
