In The Mornin’ – a heartfelt tribute in honour of the 75th anniversary of the province’s Confederation with Canada – is a newly composed song by singer-songwriter Linda Hickey. It was recorded in 2024 by the traditional Newfoundland/Irish/folk music group Hamilton Sound.

The song features a warm and uplifting melody. The lyrics celebrate Newfoundland and Labrador’s centuries-old connection to the sea and reflect upon the much more recent connection to Canada with Confederation in 1949. In The Mornin’ speaks to themes of unity, pride of place, and the enduring bond between the province and the rest of the country.

The video recording of In the Mornin’ features a number of iconic locations – the Colonial Building, Signal Hill, and the Confederation Building – in and around St. John’s, where both Hickey and Hamilton Sound have deep roots in the local music community. The song will be included on the band’s upcoming album.

In the Mornin’
Composed by Linda Hickey / Recorded by Hamilton Sound

Verse 1
In the Mornin’, as we were kissed by the sea
In the Mornin’, together you and me.
In the Mornin’, to the sun’s warm embrace
In the Mornin’, we united with grace.

Verse 2
In the year of forty-nine, we do recall.
An island in sea, we were big but we were small.
We found a home, we were embraced.
We joined Canada and we found our place.

Instrumental Break
Verse 3
As we celebrate, this diamond jubilee
Three quarters of a century, you will agree. Our offerings to the table, they were not few
Resources in abundance, we offered up to you!

Chorus
In the Mornin’, as we were kissed by the sea
In the Mornin’, together you and me.
In the Mornin’, to the sun’s warm embrace
In the Mornin’, we united with grace.

Verse 4
Newfoundland to Canada, forever entwined.
In the Mornin’, in nineteen forty-nine.
Newfoundland and Labrador forever we praise,
We joined Confederation and our flags we proudly raise!

Chorus
In the Mornin’, as we were kissed by the sea
In the Mornin’, together you and me.
In the Mornin’, to the sun’s warm embrace
In the Mornin’, we united with grace.
